A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such medications need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
